La Catrina with Chihuahua
This is my entry for the PCAGOE October Challenge, themed "Day of the Dead". To vote for your favorite entry, visit pcagoe.com between October 1 and 3.
This is Catrina, the popular skeletal lady figure often seen in La Dia de los Muertos celebrations and altars.
La Catrina represents the upper class and the understanding that no one, not even aristocrats, are immune from death when it comes calling.
I also see Catrina as representing fun and play in afterlife, as she is so often dressed in fancy, colorful clothing adorned with flowers and smiling gleefully.
This Catrina art doll is made entirely of polymer clay with a bit of Tibetan lambs wool as hair. She is 7.5" tall.

The Black Calaveras
I made this little guy ahead of time! He was made to serve two purposes, one as my October Challenge and two as a sample of a jeweled skull that I made, for when I taught a day of the dead sugar skull workshop back in June.

Dia De Los Muertos sugar skulls necklace
I made these for the etsy polymer clay street team challenge for October 2008. Polymer clay skulls are liberally dusted with "sugar" which is actually a sparkly mica powder, colored designs with Micron markers, and glittered eye sockets. MMMM, tasty! I live in South Florida where the Mexican and Latino influence is strong, so I am looking forward to how things will go this year on the Day of the Dead.

Dios de los muertos
This is pollyhyper's October PCAGOE challenge entry.
I took a slightly different approach to this month's theme, "Day of the Dead."
This holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and relatives who have passed away.
This mosaic was made in honor of and inspired by Lynn Piper Alberti, my aunt, who passed away just about two years ago. She was my "Auntie Mame" and was a major creative inspiration in my life. She was an artist herself, and the tiles are inspired by her style and love of color and pattern, as well as popular patterns in her work such as paisley.
She is greatly missed and remembered.

Marigold Skull
This is my representation of a calavera, a Day of the Dead skull, featuring marigolds as the eyes and nose, and brightly painted features. The skull is polymer clay on an aluminum armiture, then painted with off-white acrylic to allow a slightly cracked look. Details are painted with liquid clay tinted with alcohol inks. Black acrylic paint is used for the outlines. Skull is glazed with clear liquid clay.
