Ocean Paintings
Slideshow by Alisha Baker
The Ocean Eternal is a series I've been working on for the last few years, beginning with my return to Seattle from Los Angeles. The ocean has been my muse all my life, and these paintings trace the history of my relationship with it. It's been a long-distance relationship for the most part, as I've grown up in the greater Seattle area, and each time I've tried to live elsewhere, I find myself gravitating back here. But there have been countless roadtrips to the ocean, and the distance creates a space for the longing and reflection of it. This series draws on memories of summers spent in San Jose, traveling over the hills to Santa Cruz beach and boardwalk, Rio Del Mar beach, the five months spent living in LA and the trips along the Pacific Coast Highway between LA and San Jose, the 10 days in Aruba visiting a friend, and all the day trips (and sometimes overnight crashed out on the beach) to the Oregon Coast and Washington coast.
