waste not want not yardage

i saved all of the scraps from projects over the course of 2 years (2002 to 2004) and made this yardage. I called it my Lady in Waiting blanket, because I was waiting for my boyfriend at the time (not the man I married) to come back to the US and settle down. this is only one piece of it, it's really actually huge.
for some reason even then I seemed to know it wasn't gonna work out!

Affordable Uptown Living

From a series of installations that began in 2001. These mobile homes involved renting land by the hour at parking meters. These mobile homes were later set up by a larger group of us, we had probably 10 tents and a big ol' bag of quarters. We set them up on Tryon Street, the main street through our downtown area. Blogged about here

Affordable Uptown Living

This installation was set up on Morehead Street near Panther's Stadium. Obviously the tents are not large enough for people. This is one of the artist's that helped install that day. I believe we set up 30 tents. They were all black material, quite a stark installation. The city had them cleaned up and removed within an hour of it being set up. Not a trace to be found. Affordable Uptown Living

This land was formerly home to a warehouse in the "arts district" of Charlotte. An area that was home to affordable studios, avant garde galleries, and street art. The area was dubbed NoDa by some sort of developments comission (for North Davidson, the main street that runs through the area), and has become expensive condos and more formal galleries. Many of the existing buildings prior to the development have been torn down and rebuilt as "loft style living." Blogged about here

Tents awaiting their turn in the parking lot. This was a practice run before the installation at the actual meters. We learned on this particular day we would need more weight to them as well as brakes. Blogged about here

anthropomorphic dance

one of a handful of animals killed on roads in town I dressed up in tutus. I'm one of those people who gasps and turns my head at roadkill, and am never quite sure how to differentiate the pets killed in accidents and wildlife.

This was in 2002, I believe. I took a lot of sanitary precautions while doing this "installation." (still finding and uploading all sorts of images from my college days)
