Deadly Duo
One of a series of burnet moth shots i took at Gaddon loch mid summer. These are day flying moths and as their colour suggests are poisonous and actually contain traces of cyanide.

Cocoon
I am a great lover of butterflies and moths. I have always wanted to photograph the very beautiful Elephant Hawkmoth but have yet to see one. I regularly find the caterpillar of this moth however so i thought i would have a go at rearing one. I found the caterpillar in Sept and fed it for a few weeks. It then pupated as you can see in this image. It will remain like this for around 8-9 months. If all goes well the moth should emerge in April or May.
( there are two photos of this caterpillar in my photostream) www.flickr.com/photos/21651868@N07/3788980380/in/set-7215...

Northern Brown Argus
One of Scotlands rarer butterflies and very few sites here in Fife. Not easy photographing these little guys as they are very edgy and were not resting for long.

Chimney sweeper
A chimney sweeper moth on Auchtermuchty common. The light wasn't great and it didn't seem to be very photogenic as i had alot of problems trying to get a good shot. This was the best i could manage.

Poplar Hawkmoth
Found this large Poplar Hawkmoth today. Latin name: Laothoe populi
Size: Approximately 70 to 90mms wingspan
Distribution: Found throughout the U.K.
Months seen: May to July
Food: The adults do not feed, but the caterpillars feed on willows, aspen, sallow and poplars (hence the name).
Habitat: Gardens, parks and woods.
Special features: The poplar hawk-moth can vary in colour from grey to pinky-brown.
The hind wings stick out in front of the forewings when at rest. This is because the moth has no 'frenulum' - a kind of hook for holding the wings in position.
When disturbed the poplar hawk-moth flashes two bright orange patches on the hindwings. The patches are hidden when the moth is resting.
The caterpillars of the poplar hawk-moth are bright green with a yellow horn on the rear end, and diagonal yellow stripes along the sides of the body.

Dunnock
It was very cold at Birnie this morning so the birds were really desperate for food. The usually fairly shy Dunnocks were also coming really close.
