2/365 -- By the Babbling Brook

Even in the still of winter, this stream rushes on to who knows where. It's peaceful to sit on this bridge and watch the water flow by, until the next vehicle gets its turn. (Thomas Mitchell Park, Iowa)

5/365 -- The Canadian Toonie

Coins date back to the 7th Century B.C. They come in many denominations, shapes and metals. They pay tribute to many things: nature, politicians, and other themes of value to a country's people.

My POD features the Canadian Toonie! It recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. It is bi-metallic and features a polar bear walking on an ice flow in early summer on one side and, like all other Canadian coins, a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the other side.

Did you know the edge of the Toonie has five ridged sections (similar to the ridges on a quarter) separated by five smooth sections. Hmmm, wonder if I could capture that detail on the camera! May try that sometime!

6/365 -- Reflections on a Fresh New Start

Every day has much to offer. However, today is extra special. This picture depicts a new dawn, a first day back for our high school students, a new semester. Our students will have many new classes as they begin this second semester. There will be new friends, new teachers, and new routes to new classrooms and new faces to meet. May the halls, classrooms, and every other little corner of the school be filled with smiles and happiness. This is our sincere hope!

Today's beautiful sunrise, overlooking the pond on the school's campus, adds an endorsement of excitement and fulfillment for great things to come for our students in 2009.

7/365 -- Peace sign

I got this for the high school students, thinking they might enjoy it! What an understatement! It is so much fun to feel and make creations! Everyone that drops by the library has to pick it up and try it out!

Here is our offering to you -- peace!

9/2009 -- Together We Can

This agricultural grain elevator towers over my hometown. It is a proud member of the Farmers Cooperative and stores corn and soybean. There are 40 FC grain elevators across central Iowa, serving 5800 farmers, with the first established in 1881. This elevator sits by the railroad, offering easy access to a global market. What a great motto for the FC: Together we can! What great lessons to be learned from a long history of success in these agricultural cooperatives. (Altoona, Iowa)

11/365 -- Balance: Mix Work & Play

This mixing board reminds me of balancing input and output of work and play.

"Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some."

A negative six degrees and still standing strong and proud!

Is there a lesson here? This tree has survived many years of storms, cold temps, and hot days. It just keeps standing tall. This beautiful landscape is an inspiration!

16/365 -- Horses in the Snow

What a magnificent view this evening along the farmlands of Central Iowa. The temperature has warmed to 16 degrees, and these horses are enjoying warmer weather. How pretty to see them pawing around in snow.

19/365 -- Opening Scene to a Beautiful Day!

When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is
to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.
- Marcus Aurelius

What a joy to be a part of a 365 group! It helps a person open his / her eyes to the beauty around. How many of these sunrises have I just overlooked!

20/365 -- A Day in History for these Teens

These students are watching history unfold before their very eyes, via CNN over the Internet! Off in the background is a cable TV showing the inauguration for more viewers. And beyond the edges of this picture is the computer lab, with another live streaming of the inauguration. The library was packed and lively!

What a joy to share this inaugural experience with these students. And the greatest thrill was to watch a group of students arrive at 7:00 this morning to decorate the library with streamers, move chairs and tables and prepare for this exciting event!

Facebook's connection on CNN was interesting! The collaborative effort of CNN and Facebook allowed the viewers to see many different perspectives on today's event. Comments were very passionate and supportive of this historical event.

22/365 -- Friends Count

Our high school library shares a unique bond of friendship at the puzzle table! The whole school gets involved in putting these together...students and staff. Rarely is a piece lost. It is an accomplishment each time a person adds a piece. Doesn't this show the spirit of teamwork?

This puzzle was so beautiful, we wanted to share it with you!

23/365 -- Word of the Day

Walking by the dictionary in our library, the pages were opened to the Ps. This word caught my attention -- perform. Of course a verb means ACTION!

There are countless chances to perform daily in a high school: sports, math exercises, band or choral melodies, science experiments, speeches, writing assignments, metal crafts, automotive repairs, sewing, cooking, drawing, etc.

The synonyms sum it up nicely: Wouldn't it be nice if ever student would perform, achieve, and fulfill...to the very best of his / her ability? That's the school's mission!

How has Postwar America molded our world today?

26/365 -- Swirling Bread

Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.
~Nelson Mandela

How might a baker describe this marble rye bread: robust, hearty, bubbly? These words seem to, likewise, describe vocabulary and language development that we hope to stir in our students!

30/2009 -- Iowa...it's Everywhere

How much fun to get a double image of farmland! However, I am sitting on an icy gravel road and feeling a little insecure! I wouldn't want to get stuck!

There is something pretty as the snows begin to melt and there's a hint of last summer's cultivation (Ankeny, Iowa).

That's on the menu for Monday! Yeah! Thanks cooks!
