I decided to make a polymer clay cane from a picture of my cat, Chester. First I reduced the number of colors in photoshop, this is a how-to and a cautionary tale as well :)

My mistake was starting WAY TOO BIG. This is his right eye.

But once I started, I committed to it and kept going.

Two of the colors were not straight from the package and I would not do that again because I had to mix more halfway through and it was hard to match them.

By this point I realized that it was a monster cane and I didn't want to finish it but my husband encouraged me to anyway.

I can see his face and that helps.

I realized at this point I should have made the two eyes first, then built out from there.

I simplified the already simplified image as I went.

It was so hard to get enthusiastic about making the ears, but my husband wanted to see how it would turn out so I was encouraged to continue.

I ran out of the Ecru clay so I mixed my own.

The detail work is done, time to fill in around the head to help it keep its shape and make a circle I can roll later.

It's way bigger than I planned and it's taking a huge amount of clay to fill in the circle that his head has to become so I can roll the clay like a log.

I have to condition (squish throroughly) each package of clay I open, my hands are sore!

Starting to reduce the cane, this was very physical work!

I read how to reduce without distortion but I certainly have not mastered it!

The new clay was softer than the original clay and it distorted when I reduced it, but I think it's cute!

When I roll it small enough I can cut slices and bake them. They have the picture on both sides because it goes all the way through.

I kept smiling every time I looked at the tray, so that's a nice result of two solid days of sometimes frustrating work!
