Lava Beds National Monument 2422a
Petroglyph Point at the national monument. Though not visible in this pictue, the lower area of the cliff is covered in petroglyphs (see adjacent picture). Before BLM drained the area for farming in the early 1900's, these cliffs were reached by canoe by Native Americans who inscribed petroglyphs in the rock. Part of a series of pictures on California?s Backside.

Toquime Cave, Nevada
Rock art paintings at Toquime Cave, Nevada. This was somewhere east of
Austin, turn right up a forest/state road, and then head for the
hills. I don't know what the symbols mean. Unfortunately, "protected"
by a big fence, so you had to sneak the camera past it and not drop
it.
