Slideshow by Alisha Baker
I know many of the purists will criticize painting from photos, which I understand. Yes, it's important to understand and translate light and space in three dimensions while looking directly at your subject. I get it. But, being realistic, my nature is such that the things that excite me and compel me to paint are fleeting: The expression in a face or gesture, the crashing ocean waves, light and life and energy. And I usually find these moments by participating in them, snapping pictures as I go. Then I have time to reflect on them later in the studio when I'm in the mood to paint and meditate. Here is a glimpse of the seeds of future paintings, or at the very least the soil from which the work springs. (All photos taken by Alisha Baker unless otherwise noted)
