being there
(child in poverty, san francisco, 6/26/07)
it's an in between day. stalled on the way somewhere. a strange intermission. tomorrow will better judge.
a lady pushes a stroller by as i hardly notice. except for a glimpse of golden locks.
they're at the intersection when i arrive. i glance down and the child in the stroller looks up. i smile. he says "hello" and smiles back. the woman doesn't notice; she continues along. and i go another way.
but they really don't seem off to an evening stroll; as they enter the park. and i peer back as they approach a group of figures barely visible under the darkness of a tree.
the woman pulls something from her jacket which she passes to the others.
i return from another direction and i'm stared down as i approach. there is the lady and a man; neither stranger to the elements. she's black; he's white. there are two older children and one baby in a second stroller. and there is the child i met before. he is 3.
the children are opening colorful bags of candy that the lady brought back. it seems to be dinner. the child hands me his bag.
the two youngest are the couple's children together. the family lives in a shelter and sometimes beneath the stars. they'll be in the shelter tonight. it opens at 9pm.
the child is named "chance."
"like the movie?" i ask. "peter sellers?"
the father smiles. "no. she's 32 and i'm 42 and this here is my last chance at a life."

smile

Happiness is...EYES AS BLUE AS THE SKY...and a smile just as wide...
seeing my dad and my daughter together at my son's high school graduation ceremony. Its very scarey to think just nine months earlier we almost lost him during a cardiac catheteratzation.

Ramona & Shauna Smile!
Flickr woke up on Tuesday to the sudden departure of one of it's brightest stars - Ramona Dixon (pictured left).
Denizens of Flickr had been following the soap opera of Ramona's bout with a brain tumor for over two weeks.
See link below for a nearly play by play coverage of Ramona's dramatic fight against the brain tumor.
72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:qiRzZlJ7OuoJ:www.flickr.com/...
Only guess what?
It wasn't real. No tumor and no Ramona. It was all a hoax, the product of the imagination of Shauna.
Some of you may remember Ramona as the beautiful brunette who posted pictures of herself and two darling girls along with massive amounts of soft porn and cheesecake shots. Ramona was listed as having an MBA and as managing an international law office in New Zealand. She was described as having both a girlfriend, Shauna and a boyfriend who I won't name because he's already suffered enough. Suffice it to say that by all accounts he's a good guy.
Ramona had a very tear jerking story. It started off with Aron. Aron was her husband who had died of cancer. The problem with that story was that his date of death in 2001 had him dying before his two adorable girls were born. "Think Science" was the reply. Apparently Ramona was artificially inseminated before his tragic death of cancer. Good thinking on Ramona's part. There was a romantic set of pictures of Ramona on the beach with Aron. They were backlit without a flash so their faces were darkened. The only problem was when you increased the brightness or gamma on the shots; it became obvious that the man on the beach wasn't Aron. When this was brought up, these pics simply disappeared. This would happen to several inconvenient pics.
The big show was the tumor though. This is where she got to milk people's sympathies in a way she hadn't been able to do before. The heroine calmly announced through a cartoon that she had a brain tumor. A surgery was set and well wishers began posting their hopes that it wasn't cancerous and that she would have a full recovery. People posted pictures of flowers in tribute to Ramona. By the time it was pulled this page had logged over 5,000 views.
Still there were problems. Pictures of body painting on Shauna's stream were discovered to have been taken by another photographer. She had simply cropped out the bottom with the proper photo credits.
Doubts were beginning to spread about the credibility of Ramona's story. As Ramona went in for surgery, several people asked for the hospital and room number. There was no response for several hours. One person suggested that people make a donation to their local hospitals in Ramona's name. Shauna who was now directly managing Ramona's stream immediately echoed those that idea saying that Ramona agreed. Later there was an announcement from Shauna that the tumor was benign. There was a sense of relief and optimism in the thread. The prayers for Ramona's recovery continued.
On Friday night after Ramona supposedly answered her email less than 24 hours after brain surgery to remove a tumor, I confronted Shauna directly and told her that it was impossible for Ramona to have answered so soon after surgery and that she could be sued for defamation of character for what she had done with this woman's pictures. I was blocked on Ramona's and Shauna's stream.
Oddly enough I wasn't blocked on the boyfriend's site. Believing him to be another victim of this hoax, I emailed him with a list of discrepancies that indicated that Shauna was in fact Ramona. The main point was that if they were lovers why wasn't there a picture of the two of them together? I didn't hear back from Robert, but pictures began to disappear. Finally on Sunday night this picture above appeared on Ramona's stream. After a mere three days of recovery, Ramona was back in old form to tell her boyfriend that she was real and that she was tired of all the drama on flickr. Since the boyfriend hadn't blocked me, I emailed him a list of the flaws in this picture which are marked in notes above.
Then on Tuesday morning there was no more Ramona. During the night a message appeared for a few hours saying that the tumor wasn't benign. Several of her fans were stunned. Where had she gone? Was she a hoax? Why hadn't she left an explanation?
It might seem easy to dismiss those fooled as gullible, but someone else was fooled also. Someone who you probably wouldn't consider gullible. His name is Glenn Reynolds and he runs instapundit.com
instapundit.com is a rightwing political blog that runs such headlines as:
"MICAH WRIGHT AGAIN? The Milbloggers say they've spotted another fake antiwar veteran" has itself been faked out. Congratulations Glenn you're doing a great job of keeping everyone informed of the latest, most accurate and most important news. Exactly why Ramona was considered as important as the problems in Congress eludes me.
This pic is for the people who got sucked into this hoax, including a friend of mine who lost a wife to cancer and wanted to lend his support to Ramona. It's also for the people on flickr like Sara Heinrichs (awfulsara) who is actually dealing with cancer right now. It's also for the people who helped me do the fact checking that Glenn couldn't be bothered to do. Lastly it's also for a woman out there who's pictures were used to gain the attention and popularity that Shauna was never able to garner for herself.
Update: Two days after the photostreams of "Ramona" and Shauna were removed, two previously existing streams began commenting that "Ramona" was in fact a real person. One claimed to have been an ex boyfriend who had been used by her. Neither were able to provide a picture of themselves with "Ramona". They alternated between seeking sympathy for "Ramona" and mocking those who believed in her.
