Introducing Writer

Have you ever heard of WriteRoom? It’s a marvelous, no-frills Mac OS X text editor. It was created with the intent of producing a “distraction free writing” environment. I loved the idea.

I don’t have a Mac so I searched for a Windows version. Turns out there are two. One is a Windows only app called Dark Room. I tried it and I really liked it. Like WriteRoom, your desktop, all the shiny icons on it, all those cluttered overlapping windows in the background—they all disappear when you start it up. All you’re left with is a blank canvas to write on. Unfortunately, it does have a few bugs, it’s beta, and development seems slowish. The other is JDarkRoom. It’s written in Java which is a pain to run so I haven’t tried it.

So, I decided it would be fun and useful to create a version of this elegant software that could be used by everyone, everywhere, online.

Introducing writer.bighugelabs.com.

At first I thought it would just be fun. But as I developed it a little, I realized it was actually a fairly useful app. It’s fast. It feels like a desktop application even though it’s on the internet. It saves your documents automatically so you don’t have to worry about losing your work.

You just write. And your words are saved for you. And it’s that easy. Give it a whirl.

Nice site. Looks just like my Vim screen (via Mac terminal).

    Any chance of Vim controls?

You mean like you want to be able to type <Esc>gq4<Down>? Are you nuts? ;-) It’s not likely.
