Flickr Explore statistics

These statistics are based on values that come directly from the Scout database at fd’s Flickr Toys. The most striking change since the last update is the sheer number of additional people who are now in Explore compared to July 2006. There are 21,458 more people in Explore now than there were in July (a whopping 46% increase!).

This is a change that many people have felt lately as the Explore algorithm has gone through another change in late September/early October that left many people with far fewer entries in Explore than they used to have. It’s clear that those spots have been given to a more diverse group of users yielding an Explore with much more variety.

Users in Explore: 68311
Average photos/user: 5.8
Users with exactly 1 photo: 28355 (41.51%)
Users with >1: 39956 (58.49%)
Users with >10: 9085 (13.30%)
Users with >25: 2905 (4.25%)
Users with >50: 877 (1.28%)
Users with >75: 380 (0.56%)
Users with >100: 184 (0.27%)
Users with >250: 13 (0.02%)
Users with >500: 0 (0.00%)

that is so cool they figured out a way to get more diversity. it’s kinda like the never-ending quest to spread the world’s wealth ($) to a greater number of folks.

After the last Explore algorithm change, I lost some photos in Explore, but this time around I gained a couple - so I’m feeling pretty kind towards the Magic Donkey today.

Thanks so much — it’s great to see the diversity increase in Explore! It gives us all an easier path to that serendipitous discovery that ‘exploring’ is all about, for me… Nice to see the numbers backing up the general impression.

First of all, thank you muchly for Scout. I check it way too often.

Interesting to see the statistics. I was thinking there may have been a change, as all of a sudden I had new photos popping in - some of which fell right out again - but it was fun. :D

I checked Scout a couple of times over the last few months, seeing nothing of mine there- then just recently my photos started popping up! So (not just for me), thanks for widening the diversity, I do sense there’s more different ‘types of images’ on display, too!

Back before July, i had been one of the highest Explorer with some 860 photos. It has since dipped down below 200 and even though i don’t check Explore very often, i still see quality there and a whole lot more people are getting at least one photo in - which i think is good. I’m glad they kept tweaking it.
